Former Holstein head, Robert Rumler, passes away

Robert RumlerRobert Rumler, long-time Holstein Executive Secretary and dedicated dairy industry leader passed away on January 10, 2010; he was 93 years old. Rumler served as Executive Secretary of the Holstein Friesian Association (now Holstein USA) from 1952 to 1975. In 1976, Rumler was elevated to the position of Executive Chairman. The Holstein breed's influence grew a great deal under his leadership. By the time Rumler retired, over 75 percent of the registered dairy cattle in the U.S. were Holstein. During his tenure, active membership in the Holstein Friesian Association grew from 15,000 to 27,000 with total membership in excess of 40,000. During his tenure in the mid-1970s, the Holstein Friesian Association installed a computer center and became the largest single source of genetic data and information on the Holstein breed in the world.

Born and raised on a Pennsylvania dairy farm, Rumler graduated with honors from Penn State University in 1936. After graduation, he went on to serve as assistant county agent in Missouri. Some 18 months later he came to back Pennsylvania, he became the youngest man to ever be named county agent in the history of the Pennsylvania Extension Service; it was a role he held for nearly eight years. His next challenge was serving three years as editor and assistant manager of the agricultural promotion division of Dupont before he was named, in 1948, as assistant Executive Secretary of the Holstein Friesian Association of America.

Rumler gave a great deal of his time to other dairy organizations. In 1967, he was selected by the USDA as one of four advisors to the newly appointed Joint Task Force on Dairy Research. The very next year, he was elected President of National Dairy Shrine. Rumler also served as an officer and director of the National Society of Livestock Record Associations. He also provided leadership to the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association and was an original member of the National DHIA coordinating group. In 1976, Rumler was named National Dairy Shrine Guest of Honor and in 1979 he received World Dairy Expo's Industry Person of the Year Award. In 1996, Rumler also received World Dairy Expo's International Person of the Year making him the only person to win two of World Dairy Expo's recognition awards.

In 1974, Rumler agreed to co-chair the fundraising committee with Robert Walton for National Dairy Shrine's permanent home in Fort Atkinson, Wis. At the National Dairy Shrine's dedication on September 29, 1981, Rumler said, "What you see today in this permanent home of the Shrine is a museum with a perspective of the future. It is a building, an exhibit hall, filled with memorabilia of the past, reminding us of how far our industry has come. It pictures those leaders who made the industry what it is today. It provides a suggestion of what is yet to come while we both see and hear the fascinating saga of the evolution of our industry."

National Dairy Shrine names award winners

National Dairy Shrine (NDS) is pleased to announce the winners of the Pioneer, Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder, and Guest of Honor Awards for this year. These awards were designed to honor dairy industry leaders who have contributed to strengthening and enlivening the dairy industry.

Dr. William Sandine is the Guest of Honor, the highest award from the National Dairy Shrine. This award goes to an individual who has had a dramatic impact on the dairy industry and its future. Dr. Sandine had an illustrious career at Oregon State University. He mentored over 70 graduate students and developed several patented processes to improve cheese making and extending the shelf life of cheese and other processed foods. He truly changed the efficiency of the production of cheese. His patents are still being actively used today by cheese plants all over the world.

The NDS Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder is Duane Conant from Canton, Maine. The Conant Acres prefix is known throughout the world for quality Holstein cattle and friendly hospitality. Duane also has served on several Maine and national boards and committees. He has shown great leadership abilities and the foresight to try innovative breeding ideas.

Through an anonymous selection committee, Ernest Berousek, Phil Higley, Truman Graf, and Harry Roth were selected as National Dairy Shrine Pioneers. This year’s honorees are an exemplary display of what this award is about. Ernest Berousek has made significant contributions through his teaching at Oklahoma State and Rhode Island and to his devotion to the Guernsey breed. Phil Higley is best known for starting the business of commercial artificial insemination in 1941 and later became president of American Breeders Service. Professor Truman Graf, University of Wisconsin, was the most prominent dairy economist during the 1960s-1980s in the field of milk marketing. Finally, Harry Roth from Atlantic Breeders Co-op, Pennsylvania, is a true giant in the artificial insemination industry whose career includes buying elite sires to sales manager to general manager of the company.

All of these outstanding winners will be honored at the annual National Dairy Shrine Awards Banquet at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis., on Thursday, October 1, 2009. Please contact Dr. David Selner if you want to reserve banquet tickets at info@dairyshrine.org or at 920-863-6333.

Maurice Core Fund to be established

National Dairy Shrine has a long and storied 60-year history of awarding scholarships to young people. Last year alone, over $30,000 in awards was given to America’s dairy youth. In order to honor more deserving young people, the National Dairy Shrine is establishing a fund to permanently honor the distinguished career of Maurice Core, the former executive secretary of the American Jersey Cattle Association and recently retired executive director of National Dairy Shrine. As a testament to Core’s accomplishments, he was just selected as the 2009 World Dairy Expo Industry Person of the Year. The Maurice Core Scholarship will be awarded to college freshman who are majoring in dairy science or animal science related fields with long-term interests in working in the dairy industry. This scholarship will be based on leadership abilities, volunteer work, activities, and future plans.

Last fall, National Dairy Shrine Board authorized the Maurice Core fund to be established with a fund-raising goal of $50,000. National Dairy Shrine is pleased to announce that we have met 60 percent of our targeted goal but still need help from other dairy industry enthusiasts to reach the fund-raising goal. Initial response has been so generous, National Dairy Shrine will offer the first Core Scholarship this year.

Those interested in making a donation to the Maurice E. Core Scholarship Fund may send it to National Dairy Shrine, Dr. David Selner, Executive Director, P.O. Box 1, Maribel, WI 54227 or call (920) 863-6333 or e-mail info@dairyshrine.org.

Since National Dairy Shrine is a 501-3C education-based charity, all donations are tax deductible, and your donation will be recognized via letter. Additionally, your contribution will be recognized in National Dairy Shrine’s newsletter The Chronicle. During Maurice Core’s tenure as National Dairy Shrine’s executive director, he most graciously and effectively guided National Dairy Shrine to accomplish the organization’s mission of: (1.) Recording dairy history, (2.) Inspiring future dairy leaders, (3.) Honoring top dairy cattle breeders and pioneers, and (4.) Honoring present dairy pioneers.
